Abstract

Bisphenol A is a plastic toxin that is frequently used in the plastic containers production. Taurine is a natural chemical in animal tissues that is involved in the bile synthesis. The aim of study was to demonstrate the bisphenol A sub-acute toxic effects on the blood and large intestine and the possible protective role of taurine on the toxicities induced by bisphenol A. Material and Methods: forty adult albino male rats divided into 4 groups 10 rats each: Group I (Control), Group II received orally taurine (100 mg/kg/day). Group III received orally bisphenol A (130 mg/kg /day). Group IV received orally bisphenol A and Taurine at the same mentioned doses. After month all animals were sacrificed and venous blood was drawn for hematological parameters measurements. The large intestine was preserved for light microscopic histopathological examination. Results: Oral bisphenol A adminstration induced significant reduction in the RBCs count, Hb concentration, HCT, MCV, MCH, percentage of lymphocytes and mid-cell fraction and significant elevation in platelets count and WBCs count with multiple histopathological changes in large intestine like inflammatory cell infiltration, decease thickness of the colon crypts and degenerated mucosal cells compared to control group. These toxic effects declined markedly by concomitant administration of taurine with bisphenol A. Conclusion: This study concluded that bisphenol A induced toxic effects on hematological parameters and large intestine and taurine has a potential full protective role against such effects. Recommendations: Bisphenol A utilization should be limited in plasticizers and other industries and avoid improper plastic containers handling.
